King James I on smoking

James I was one of the most sensible kings of England. Not only did he unite the country with one bible, therefore ending inter necine conflict in the Christian faith, he had a view on smoking which many people have yet to realise today.
He thought that it was:
"A custom loathsome to the eye, hateful to the mind, harmful to the brain, dangerous to the lungs and in the black stinking fumes thereof nearest resembling the stygian smoke of the pit that is bottomless." 1604
A message perhaps that should have been written on old packets of cigarettes 300 years ago. Isn't it strange that the anti smoking lobby, with all the weight of scientific evidence, still provides the same message today.
